After doing several different kinds of films, the actress now has another interesting project coming to Telugu audiences. However, her upcoming film Dorothy is already creating some discussion and controversy even before its Telugu release.
Dorothy is a Tamil film directed by Karthik Subbaraj and features Keerthy Suresh along with Sanath and Rishikanth. The film was released in Tamil in September and received attention after getting a standing ovation at the Toronto International Film Festival. Now, the makers are bringing the film to Telugu audiences.
The Telugu version of Dorothy is scheduled to release in theatres on October 2. Rana Daggubati is presenting the movie in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana under his Spirit Media banner.
The film's title has become one of the talking points surrounding its Telugu release. During the Telugu announcement event in Hyderabad, a reporter asked Rana why the movie was still being called Dorothy in Telugu and what the title meant.
Rana explained that Dorothy is the name of a character in the film and said the title has a meaning that audiences will understand after watching the movie. He also said that emotions like happiness, pain and laughter do not have a language.
The reporter's question later became a topic of discussion on social media. Some people criticised the journalist for not knowing the meaning behind Dorothy. However, singer Chinmayi Sripaada came out in support of the reporter.
Chinmayi said that not everyone gets the same opportunities to read books or learn about characters from popular stories during childhood. She asked people to show some empathy instead of mocking the journalist.
The film is also surrounded by discussions because of its queer themes. According to reports, the team has faced criticism and homophobic and transphobic reactions after the Tamil release.
For Keerthy Suresh, the Telugu release of Dorothy is important as she is looking for a successful film in the Telugu market. Whether the controversy will create more curiosity among Telugu audiences or become a challenge for the film will be known after its release.
