'MAD' Movie Review

The one film which attracted the youth a lot recently is 'MAD”. The funny and crazy trailer made the youngsters connect with it instantly and the expectations grew instantly. Let us dive into the review straightaway to find out more about 'MAD'.

Story:

Manoj (Ram Nithin), Ashok (Narne Nithin) and Damodar (Sangeet Sobhan) are freshers in an engineering college. The three of them have contrasting personalities but they soon become good friends. The first letters from the three of them combine together to form 'MAD' and everyone calls them the 'MAD' gang. Three of them connect with three girls. Their relationships go through a bit of turmoil through the years. How their journey goes on forms the rest of the story.

Analysis:

'MAD' is a film that stays true to its title. The conventional meters of commercial cinema are nowhere to be seen in this film. There is no story to talk about and the screenplay too doesn't follow a pattern. The regular beginning, middle and end is not seen in the movie. All that is present in the movie are the comedy scenes. The movie caters to college students and people in their twenties who still remember their college days. The characters and situations are very relatable. The director tried to extract as much fun as possible from this. Such movies are not new in Tollywood and the scenes are not fresh either. But what separates this film from the rest is how the director did not include any drama and emotion in the proceedings. No matter how serious the situation is, all the director cares about is generating fun from it. 'MAD' is a film that you want to watch if you decide to forget everything in your life and enjoy it for two hours happily without minding about the logic. The movie leaves with not much of an impact after leaving the theatre but you will have a lot of entertainment when watching it.

The first film that comes to our mind when we talk about college life is 'Happy Days'. Also, the Hindi film '3 Idiots' is another film that left a lasting impact. A lot of films were inspired by these two flicks. 'MAD' falls under the same category but without emotions. The ragging scenes, hostel episodes, cricket match, and relationships between girls and boys are all present in this movie too. The movie reminds you of other flicks as well but the trendy comedy makes you forget about everything. In one scene, the father arrives to scold his son for getting into trouble in college. When the situation is about to get serious the father talks about leaving. When asked about it, he replies that the last bus to his village is at 11:30. Before the interval, one of the three friends feels sad about not getting the girl he likes. When a friend asks if he could do anything, he says, 'I am sad. Don't you know that you have to bring a beer?' Such funny dialogues are what takes the movie forward.

The movie moves quickly by making the youth laugh throughout. At no point will you wonder about what's happening in the story and where will it go. One scene comes after another and some of them do not have any connection too. But they make you laugh which makes you forget everything else. The movie is highly inspired by the style of 'Jathi Ratnalu' and is filled with non-sync dialogues and punches. The movie is filled with crazy characters that keep you entertained. Two of the heroes have a very good comedy timing as well. But the love stories lack any emotion or drama which makes 'MAD' a timepass flick and nothing more than that. The comedy scenes that impress the youth and the college backdrop make it very enjoyable. Beware of the cuss words and double-meaning dialogues in 'MAD' which may surprise you.

Performances:

Sangeet Sobhan who impressed us already with a couple of web series has showcased his talent once again in this movie. He has a lot of ease and we connect instantly to his character. His comedy timing is amazing and he makes the viewers laugh a lot. His looks make him suitable for interesting roles and he has a bright future. Ram Nithin looked cute and he generated a lot of laughs as well. The naughtiness can be seen in his acting. NTR's brother-in-law Narni Nithin looks ordinary. The writer gave a moody character to him and his acting was adequate. His role does not have a lot of significance compared to the other two. His screen time is also less but it is Vishnu who did a fantastic job. He scores major points when it comes to comedy. Anantika looks beautiful among the heroines and her expressions are good as well. Sree Gowri Priya did well too. Raghu Babu's principal role brings a few laughs while Muralidhar Goud did as decent as well.

Technicians:

Though it is a small film, 'MAD' maintained good technical standards. Bheems gave trendy music and the songs brought a lot of energy. Along with heavy beats, he gave some pleasing melodies as well. His background score is good too. The camerawork is attractive as well and the visuals are quite vibrant. The college atmosphere is captured perfectly. The production values are good as enough budget has been spent on a college movie. Writer-director Kalyan Shankar has a great sense of humor. He has a good grip over the college life and the madness that takes place in hostels and canteens. He did not spend a lot of time on the story but his focus was on fun moments. His only aim was to make the audience laugh in every scene and turn the film into an engaging fare. He should have focused more on the story and created more drama which would have made it even more compelling. 'MAD' would have become a special film if it happened.

Verdict: 'MAD' - A Perfect Time Pass Flick
