Great News: IMAX Preparing For Varanasi !

It is already known that Mahesh Babu and Rajamouli are currently working on the biggest project in the making in Indian cinema in the form of Varanasi. While this project continues to make the headlines, there is an interesting report going around about the IMAX projection for the same.

IMAX has responded positively to filmmaker Rajamouli’s interest in bringing an IMAX screen to Hyderabad, signaling that both the company and Indian audiences are ready.

However, despite the growing demand for premium theatrical experiences, Hyderabad still does not have clarity on when such a screen might become a reality.

Giovanni Dolci from IMAX, speaking to Variety India, stated that the company continues to collaborate closely with exhibitors across the globe, and India remains a key focus market. Since 2020, IMAX has expanded its presence in the country by nearly 60 percent.

Dolci has also previously noted that India has the potential to support at least 150 IMAX screens, highlighting the nation’s rapidly increasing appetite for large format cinema. Today, India stands as IMAX’s seventh largest market worldwide.

Even with this momentum, no exhibitor or major film personality has officially confirmed plans for an IMAX screen in Hyderabad ahead of the much anticipated 2027 film release linked to Rajamouli and Mahesh Babu. The possibility of installing a true 1.43:1 IMAX screen appears even more uncertain because of the significant time, planning, and investment required.

IMAX maintains that it is willing to build more screens, including the premium 1.43:1 format, with any interested exhibitor. The willingness exists. Now, the industry awaits someone to take the initiative.
