Did Marco Deatroy Malayalam Cinema Impression?

Recent Malayalam film, Marco turned out to be one of the biggest blockbusters of all time in Malayalam Cinema as the film was successful in grossing over Rs 100 crore at the global box office. It is one of the very few Malayalam films to have collected as much revenue at the box office globally.

But at the fundamental level, this film goes against every characteristic and trait that one would usually associate with a Malayalam film, and this is where the worry is rising.

At an instrumental level, it must be noted that Malayalam cinema is known for making films that are rich in drama and usually have very strong storylines. The writers there put almost entire emphasis on good drama generation, and vocal storytelling.

But in the case of Marco, the film almost entirely realise on action choreography and Slow Motion featuring the main lead Unni Mukundan. This goes against the fundamental fabric of Malayalam cinema and could potentially change the course of filmmaking their considering that young film makers will take Marco as an example, considering the kind of box office run it had.

If that is the case, we can expect more Malayalam films to rely more on visuals and action rather than strong storytelling, which is not usually associate with their kind of film making. This process a significant threat to the kind of cinema that is expected from the Malayalam land and comes with its own set of troubles.

But at the same time, there is always the need to diversify the portfolio and come up with new kind of films. This is where perhaps Marco scores the brownie points. Having such vivid film making, and new style of presentation is perhaps needed to change things up for freshness.
