This new order replaces an earlier one from the Alipore Sessions Court, which had directed Shami to pay ₹50,000 to Jahan and ₹80,000 for the child. Jahan had appealed, calling the earlier amount too low to cover her living costs.
In her petition, Jahan said she earns around ₹16,000 a month but spends nearly ₹6 lakh, arguing that the previous amount barely helped. She also mentioned that she couldn’t afford to admit her daughter to a good school, something she felt her child deserved, especially considering the status of other players' families. Her lawyer urged the court to look at Shami’s actual income and lifestyle while deciding the maintenance.
Shami’s side responded by saying Jahan had her own sources of income from modeling, acting, and business, and that she wasn’t as financially helpless as claimed. But the court disagreed. Justice Ajoy Kumar Mukherjee noted that based on Shami’s financial records, he was in a clear position to pay more. The court also pointed out that Jahan, who has remained unmarried and raises the child alone, deserves to maintain a standard of life close to what she had during the marriage.
