For Nag Ashwin, Kalki 2 faced an unexpected turn with Bollywood dusky beauty Deepika Padukone stepping away. While the team reworks casting, the director is reportedly considering moving forward with his long-planned woman-centric film.
Alia Bhatt, initially approached for the lead, is committed to Maddock Films’ Chamunda from March 2026, leaving little room for Ashwin’s project. Industry chatter now points to Sai Pallavi, Ashwin’s long-time preferred choice, as the likely lead. Pallavi’s skill in expressive performances and action-oriented roles makes her a natural fit for a film centered on a strong female protagonist.
An insider said the project was never abandoned. “It stayed on the back burner through most of 2025,” they revealed. “With Kalki 2’s new developments, it’s possible to bring it forward.” Pallavi’s availability is key, as she is busy with the two-part Ramayana saga, expected to wrap the second part by mid-2026. If schedules align, she could join the film before Ashwin resumes Kalki 2.
Nothing is official yet, and casting and schedules remain fluid. Yet speculation is growing about whether Sai Pallavi will replace Alia Bhatt and lead what could become one of Ashwin’s most ambitious ventures. Fans and industry watchers are eager to see if the director’s vision for a bold, woman-led action drama will finally take shape on screen.
