Nag Ashwin, the filmmaker known for rarely commenting on other films, surprised many with a rare public appreciation. The Kalki 2898 AD director shared his thoughts on the Sony LIV series Freedom at Midnight, and his praise wasn’t casual it was filled with admiration for the storytelling, production, and historical depth.

He posted, “Late to find this, but what a gem... the casting, writing, music, sets, cinematography... very well done... got introduced to so many historical figures and events I didn’t know.” For someone who’s known to maintain a low-key profile when it comes to reviewing others' work, this came as a pleasant shock to film buffs.

Freedom at Midnight, created and directed by Nikkhil Advani, brings to screen the partition of India in 1947, based on the bestselling book by Dominique Lapierre and Larry Collins. With strong performances, elaborate sets, and thoughtful writing, the show has managed to stand out in the crowd of period dramas.

Ashwin’s endorsement has now driven more eyes towards the show, especially from cinephiles who follow his work closely. When a visionary director like him calls something a “gem,” it's bound to shift conversations. It’s not every day that the man behind a futuristic epic gets floored by a history-based series.
