During a recent interview, he said that his fight is not against any individual. Instead, he wants to protect producers and distributors from losing their importance in the business.
According to Naga Vamsi, the main goal behind bringing the percentage system is to slowly remove distributors from the film business. He said that if distributors disappear, producers will have no option but to depend completely on a few powerful theatre owners for releasing their movies.
He explained that today distributors pay advances to producers and help them release films. But if the percentage system replaces the rental system, theatre managements may stop taking advances from distributors. As a result, distributors will not be able to invest in films, and their role in the industry may slowly end.
Naga Vamsi said this could create a situation where producers have to personally approach a few theatre owners and request them to release their films. He even said producers may have to ask for financial support just to get theatres, which he believes would reduce their freedom and bargaining power.
He also claimed that if theatre owners get complete control over collections, bookings and business decisions, they may ask producers to work on their terms. According to him, this would make producers more dependent on a small group of people.
The producer said filmmakers invest huge amounts of money, take loans and work very hard to make movies. Because of this, he believes they should not be forced into a position where they have to depend entirely on others for a release.
Naga Vamsi made it clear that this is the real reason behind his fight against the percentage system. He believes protecting the distributor system is important for maintaining balance in the film industry.
