Where Is the Producer in the Star-Driven Film Industry?

A movie can have a big hero, a popular heroine and a talented director. But there is one person without whom the film cannot even begin — the producer. The producer brings the money, takes the financial risk and supports the entire team. Still, producers often do not receive the same level of attention and recognition as actors and directors.

This question has once again come into discussion after an incident at the pre-release event of Nani’s The Paradise in Hyderabad.

Nani spoke for nearly 14 minutes at the event and talked about the hard work of his team, technicians and actors. However, he initially did not mention producer Sudhakar Cherukuri. According to reports, Nani’s manager reminded him about the producer at the last moment, and Nani then mentioned his name before ending his speech.

It is important to say that forgetting a name on stage does not automatically mean that there is a lack of respect. A person can miss mentioning someone during an emotional or lengthy speech. However, the incident has raised a larger question about the importance given to producers in the film industry.

For heroes and heroines, there are huge fan bases. Directors also have followers who closely watch their films and careers. But how many people know or follow a producer in the same way?

The producer is often the person who stands behind the entire project. From arranging the budget to handling production expenses, supporting the team and taking financial risks, the producer has a major responsibility. If the film succeeds, the hero and director usually receive much of the public attention. If the film fails, the producer can face a major financial burden.

Sudhakar Cherukuri has produced Dasara with Nani and is also backing The Paradise. The latter is reportedly the most expensive film in Nani’s career so far. The movie is directed by Srikanth Odela, with Kayadu Lohar as the female lead and Mohan Babu playing a key role. Anirudh Ravichander is providing the music.

The industry often celebrates stars, but producers also deserve recognition for the risks they take. Perhaps it is time for audiences and the industry to give producers the value and visibility they deserve.
