Oscars 2027 Rule Changes: Big Boost for Tollywood Films

The Oscars are known as the highest honor in the film world. Every year, actors, directors, and technicians from many countries dream of winning an award at the Academy Awards. Even getting a nomination is a big achievement because films must pass through several rounds of selection.

Recently, the Academy introduced some important rule changes to make the competition more open and fair. One major change is related to the International Feature Film category. Earlier, a movie could only be considered if it was officially submitted by its country. Now, that rule has been relaxed. If a film wins a top award at major international festivals like Cannes Film Festival or Toronto International Film Festival, it can still qualify for the Oscars even without an official entry.

This change is especially helpful for Indian films. Many big commercial movies with strong stories and high-quality production often miss out because they are not selected as the country’s official entry. Now, such films have another path to reach the Oscars if they perform well at global film festivals.

This opens the door for upcoming Tollywood films like *Varanasi*, *Kalki 2*, and *Ramayana*. These films are expected to have universal themes that can connect with international audiences. If they get recognition at top festivals, they may enter the Oscars race without depending on official selection.

A good example from the past is RRR, directed by S. S. Rajamouli. The film was not chosen as India’s official entry, but it still made a strong impact globally. Through its own campaign, it won the Best Original Song award for “Naatu Naatu,” showing that global recognition is possible even without official backing.

Another important change is in the acting categories. Earlier, an actor could be nominated for only one performance, even if they had multiple strong roles. Now, actors can be nominated for more than one film in the same year. This gives more recognition to talented performers.

However, the Academy has also clarified that only human performances will be eligible for acting and writing awards. This ensures that real talent remains at the center of cinema.
