The veteran Bollywood actor, never one to sugarcoat things, said he values genuine praise from directors or producers much more than any trophy.
By: Shanaz B Syed | 3 Nov 2025 5:41 PM ISTAwards might look all fancy and shiny, but peel off that gloss and you’ll see a few scratches underneath, that’s the picture Paresh Rawal painted when he spoke about film awards. The veteran Bollywood actor, never one to sugarcoat things, said he values genuine praise from directors or producers much more than any trophy. To him, those golden statues often come with a bit of backstage hustle.
Paresh, known for saying things straight, didn’t dance around it. He said lobbying happens everywhere, not just in India but even at the grand Oscars. I don’t know much about awards, he said casually, but there’s scope for lobbying in many of them. In fact, National Awards have even more of it. According to him, it’s not always just about performance. Sometimes it’s about who knows who, and how well they can nudge the right people.
He went on to explain that filmmakers often use their networks or throw fancy parties to get the attention of jury members. They might highlight, Oh, this is a film by so-and-so director, and that little extra push works, he said. It’s a quiet truth many know but few admit out loud, that talent isn’t the only thing that wins trophies.
