As the first major Indian film of the year, it is scheduled to hit theatres worldwide on January 9. With Prabhas playing the lead role, expectations are naturally high especially because his films usually open with impressive numbers in many regions.
In the Telugu states, Raja Saab is expected to enjoy a powerful opening. Prabhas has a loyal fan base here and the Sankranthi holiday season adds further advantage. Even average word of mouth during this festive period can help the film collect strong box office numbers. Trade circles believe that Telugu audiences will turn out in large numbers from day one.
Outside the Telugu states, the situation looks positive in most regions. In North India, Prabhas has built a strong following over the years. His previous films opened well there regardless of promotions and Raja Saab is likely to follow the same trend. Another key advantage is the lack of major Hindi releases during Sankranthi, giving Raja Saab a clear run in the Hindi belt. If the film receives good reviews, it could emerge as a solid pan-Indian success.
However, Tamil Nadu may present a tougher challenge. Popular Tamil star Vijay is bringing his film Jana Nayagan to theatres around the same time. Along with that, Sivakarthikeyan’s Parasakthi is also releasing shortly after. So Raja Saab may find it difficult to dominate the Tamil box office.
In Karnataka and Kerala, the film faces little competition. Openings are expected to be decent, with scope to grow based on audience response. Overall except for Tamil Nadu Raja Saab has favorable conditions in most markets.
Directed by Maruthi, the film blends horror and fantasy elements. Backed by People Media Factory, the project is mounted on a large scale. All eyes are now on audience feedback which will decide how far Raja Saab travels at the box office.
