This is the first officially approved scripted series about Muhammad Ali's life. The makers want to show not only his success inside the boxing ring but also his personal journey, family life, and the challenges he faced while growing up.
Actor Jaalen Best plays the role of the young Muhammad Ali. The series also features Omari Hardwick as Ali's father, Cassius "Cash" Clay Sr., and Dana Gourrier as his mother, Odessa "Bird" Clay. Kai Parham plays Ali's younger brother, Rudy Clay. The cast also includes Michael Ealy as civil rights leader Malcolm X and Amin Joseph as famous boxer Sonny Liston.
The teaser gives fans their first look at Jaalen Best as the boxing icon. It also shows some important moments from Ali's early life before he became one of the greatest sports personalities in history.
The first season begins with Ali winning the gold medal at the 1960 Rome Olympics. It follows his journey as a young boxer and ends with his famous victory over Sonny Liston in 1964. After becoming the world heavyweight champion, Cassius Clay later changed his name to Muhammad Ali, a moment that became an important part of his life story.
Showrunner Ben Watkins said the series will focus on parts of Ali's life that many people have never seen before. Instead of only showing his famous fights, the series will explore his childhood, family, dreams, and the experiences that helped shape his future. Watkins described it as a coming-of-age story that gives viewers a deeper understanding of the boxing legend.
The series is executive produced by Ali's widow, Lonnie Ali, along with several well-known production companies, including Michael B. Jordan's Outlier Society. With its strong cast and inspiring story, The Greatest is expected to attract sports fans as well as viewers who enjoy powerful biographical dramas.
