By: Priya Chowdhary Nuthalapti | 23 Oct 2026 2:00 PM ISTIndian cinema is changing and a new trend is becoming visible in Telugu cinema. Audiences are showing more interest in films that are connected to their own regions. Some movies are performing well in one area but failing to attract audiences in other places. However Pushpa proved that a regional story can win the hearts of people across India.
The story of Pushpa starring Allu Arjun is set in the Chittoor region of Andhra Pradesh. The characters speak in the local dialect and the film shows the culture and lifestyle of the region. Despite these local elements, the movie received a huge response in both Telugu states and across India. It became a major pan-India success.
Similarly, the Kannada film Kantara connected with audiences beyond its home region. These films proved that strong stories and powerful performances can attract people from different backgrounds.
However, the situation seems different for some recent Telugu movies.
Nani's The Paradise received a strong response in Telangana, but its performance in other regions was not as encouraging. The film's Telangana based story and the presence of a character inspired by KCR helped local audiences connect with it. However the movie could not achieve the same level of success elsewhere.
Vijay Deverakonda's Ranabaali received mixed reviews after its release. However, the film performed well in Rayalaseema. Since the story is set in Anantapur, the local dialect and setting helped audiences in the region connect with the movie. The film reportedly reached the break even point and started generating profits there.
On the other hand, Garividi Lakshmi based on the life of North Andhra burrakatha artist Garividi Lakshmi also received a good response in its home region. The film attracted audiences during the festival period, with several theatres reporting houseful shows. It reportedly collected around Rs. 2.5 crore in gross revenue in North Andhra, a notable figure for a film of its scale.
However, the response in other regions was comparatively limited.
This trend has created a big discussion in Tollywood. Filmmakers are happy when their movies succeed in at least one region but they also worry about audiences limiting their support to local stories. Only Pushpa movie achieved success across all regions even with its rooted story, remaining all are struggling hard with this.
