Indian cinema, and the kind of censorship that happens here are as enigmatic as it can get. There is a lot of applied mechanisms that work here as the censoring of certain films is almost completely unreliable.

On that note, we have another new film that is preparing for release soon with a lot of adulterated content. The film and discussion here has Bollywood actress Radhika Apte in the lead role.

Radhika Apte headlines Sister Midnight, a bold, surreal dark comedy directed by Karan Kandhari, hitting Indian theatres on May 23, 2025. Set in the heart of a chaotic Mumbai slum, the film follows Uma, a fiercely independent woman who finds herself trapped in an arranged marriage.

As she battles against cultural norms and oppressive expectations, her reality spirals into a bizarre world of hallucinations, goats, and rebellion. Apte�s performance is almost entirely non-verbal, driven by physical expression and emotional nuance, shaped through intense rehearsals.

Premiering at Cannes and earning a BAFTA nomination, Sister Midnight has already received international acclaim for its striking visual storytelling and social commentary on gender roles and class.

There is a lot of aggressive cinema making technique that is applied for this film, and that is the reason why it is going for Cannes film festival. It has to be seen if the Indian censor board would rightly adjudicate it and permit theatrical release here in the future.
