The issue has created a discussion on social media about women’s clothing, personal freedom and the way festivals are represented in advertisements.
Rahul Gandhi shared Kriti’s Instagram Story on his own Instagram account. He said that a woman should have the freedom to decide what she wears, what she does and where she goes. He also asked people not to target women simply because they make their own choices. He used the hashtag “Smash the Patriarchy” while sharing his message.
The controversy started after Kriti appeared in a jewellery advertisement for GIVA. In the commercial, she was seen wearing a bralette-style blouse with a cape and a draped skirt while tying a rakhi to her on-screen brother. Some social media users felt that the outfit was not suitable for a Raksha Bandhan advertisement.
Kriti later responded to the criticism through social media. She questioned why women are still told what they should wear. According to her, the meaning of a festival should not be judged by a person’s clothes. She said Raksha Bandhan is mainly about love, care, protection and the bond between family members.
Kriti also spoke about the part of the advertisement where she tied a rakhi to a dog. She explained that pets are also part of families and said that the wishes and love connected with the festival can include them too.
However, not everyone supported Kriti. BJP MP and actress Kangana Ranaut also reacted to the advertisement. Without directly naming Kriti, she questioned the choice of outfit and said that women today have many fashion options.
The controversy has now turned into a wider debate about personal choice, traditional celebrations and changing fashion.
