By: Shanaz B Syed | 1 Nov 2025 6:14 PM ISTThey say every filmmaker hides a few bruises behind the camera, and for Rahul Ravindran, that bruise was Manmadhudu 2. The actor-turned-director, who first showed his acting charm in Andala Rakshasi and later impressed everyone with his directorial debut Chi La Sow, had a rough patch when Manmadhudu 2 didn’t quite land right with audiences. The romantic comedy starring Akkineni Nagarjuna was meant to be a breezy follow-up to the 2002 classic Manmadhudu, but it ended up being trolled as a “copy.” Now, as he gears up to release his new movie The Girlfriend with Rashmika Mandanna, Rahul has finally decided to set things straight.
In a recent chat, Rahul didn’t dodge the question. “It’s not a copy. It’s an official remake,” he said, plain and simple. He explained that Manmadhudu 2 was officially adapted from the 2006 French film I Do, and that Annapurna Studios had bought the rights properly. “I told them right at the start, let’s do it the right way. And we did,” he added. Despite all that effort, the film ended up getting mixed to negative reviews, and it flopped at the box office. But Rahul didn’t seem bitter. If anything, he looked like a man who’s made peace with his past.
He admitted that the criticism stung but taught him a lot. You learn way more from failure than from success, he said. Sometimes things don’t click, and that’s okay. Over time, fans seem to have understood that too. Many who once criticized him are now saying they respect his honesty and calm way of handling all the noise. Rahul’s not the type to shout back, he just quietly moves on and lets his next project do the talking.
Now, all eyes are on The Girlfriend, releasing on November 7. The songs and trailer already have people curious, and Rashmika’s fresh, lively performance is grabbing attention.
