Words are funny things. One moment they sound warm and honest, and the next, they’re lighting fires online. Director Rahul Ravindran, who’s ready with his third movie The Girlfriend, probably didn’t expect all this fuss over one casual line he said while promoting the film. What began as a simple chat about equality in marriage somehow turned into a full-blown social media debate.

Rahul had mentioned, After our marriage, I told my wife, Singer Chinmayi, it’s her choice whether to wear a mangalsutra or not. I even suggested not wearing it, because it’s unfair that men have no visible sign of being married while women are expected to have one. It was a fair point, but the internet doesn’t let go that easily. One person even commented, You lost my respect, Anna. That’s when Rahul stepped in politely and replied, Buddy, it’s ok to disagree or lose respect for someone. But I appreciate how you said it decently.

That little exchange caught everyone’s eye. The same user later softened up, saying, It’s my nature, Anna 😊 All the best for The Girlfriend. I’m waiting to see how you show Rashmika’s character. Honestly, this back-and-forth felt more human than most online fights. No shouting, no trolling, just two people talking.

Now, coming to the film, The Girlfriend hits theatres on 7th November. It stars Rashmika Mandanna as Bhooma, a young woman stuck in a possessive relationship. The movie explores emotions, control, and love’s messy side. And with this small controversy blowing up, Rahul’s film has already started conversations, even before it hits the screens. Sometimes, it’s not just the movie that makes noise, it’s the man behind the mic.
