It is already on the Rajamouli is the most progressive and dynamic film maker in Indian cinema when it comes to executing massive scale projects. Now he is working with Mahesh Babu for Varanasi, which happens to be the costliest project in the making in Indian Cinema.

S. S. Rajamouli is once again pushing the boundaries of Indian cinema, this time with a groundbreaking sequence in his upcoming film Varanasi. For a crucial stretch set in Varanasi, Rajamouli used cutting edge motion capture technology instead of relying entirely on traditional shooting methods.

The sequence was filmed at the newly launched A and M Motion Capture Lab at Annapurna Studios in Hyderabad. This facility, developed in collaboration with Mihira Visual Labs and powered by global tech partner Animatrik Film Design, is now considered one of the most advanced of its kind in India.

Rather than shooting entirely on real locations, the team captured actor performances in a controlled environment using sensors and performance capture techniques. This allowed Rajamouli to recreate the spiritual and visual complexity of Varanasi with greater precision, scale, and creative freedom.

The technology helped blend realism with cinematic imagination, enabling highly detailed environments, crowd simulations, and complex action choreography. Rajamouli himself noted that such infrastructure was previously unavailable in India, forcing filmmakers to depend on foreign facilities.

With this innovation, Varanasi is not just another big budget film but a major technological leap. It signals a shift where Indian filmmakers can now execute world class visual storytelling entirely within the country.
