Director Ram Gopal Varma (RGV) who is well known for his bold opinions recently gave a surprising and emotional review about Kannappa. In a personal WhatsApp message, RGV shared that although he is not a believer in gods or religious subjects, he was deeply moved by the performance of Vishnu in this film.

RGV mentioned that he usually avoids films with religious themes. He had seen the original version of Kannappa during his college days, but only for its hero, heroine, and songs not for the religious subject. However, Vishnu’s portrayal of Thinnadu in Kannappa completely changed his view. He described the actor’s performance as not just acting but as embodying the role like a “high priest,” full of strength and emotion.

He especially praised the climax scene where Thinnadu offers his eyes to stop the bleeding of the Shiva lingam. RGV said the scene was so powerful and emotionally moving that, as an atheist, even he was touched. He called the performance a “masterclass” in expressing emotional depth, kl saying the actor’s face was like a “canvas of anguish with a painting of reverence.”

RGV concluded by saying that while most people may watch the film for Prabhas, he himself would go to the theatre just to watch it for Vishnu.

And for this message Vishnu emotionally replied, saying RGV’s words made him cry and gave him strength during one of the hardest times in his life.
