Just like trying to catch lightning in a bottle, remaking a hit film is all about timing. A remake that comes too late risks losing its spark, especially in today’s world where audiences can easily stream the original with subtitles. That’s precisely why star-hero films like Godfather and Bhimla Nayak struggled to hit their expected marks at the box office.

One such film that made waves in 2021 was Maanaadu, a Tamil film that became a huge success and revived actor Simbu’s career, while also elevating SJ Suryah’s status as a performer. The movie, which was based on a time-loop concept, was embraced by a wide audience when it hit OTT platforms with Telugu dubbing, attracting massive viewership. Recognizing its success, Suresh Productions quickly snapped up the remake rights.

However, the process of casting the right hero and director for the Telugu remake hit roadblocks. Several names, including Sai Dharam Tej, Varun Tej, and even Ravi Teja, were floated, but none materialized. The remake continued to be postponed as no lead actor was finalized.

Cut to the present: Rana Daggubati seems to be moving forward with plans to remake Maanaadu—but in Hindi, not Telugu. Talks are reportedly in progress with director Ashwin Gangaraju, known for Akashavani. While the cast remains undecided, the remake is expected to undergo significant changes to suit the tastes of the Hindi-speaking audience, reflecting the lessons learned from failed South-to-Hindi remakes like Jersey, Hit: The First Case, and Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo.

Time is of the essence when it comes to remakes, and Maanaadu’s delayed journey into Hindi cinema could either be a missed opportunity or a carefully re-engineered success. Only time will tell.
