Girlfriend Arrives, Let’s Find Which Women-Centric Films Failed Or Won Recently
Tollywood audiences, to be honest, love their heroes larger than life. They don’t always give the same energy to female-led stories.
By: Shanaz B Syed | 4 Nov 2025 12:24 PM ISTIn Telugu cinema, heroes usually grab all the noise, whistles, cutouts, and cheers. But once in a while, a heroine steps up to take that space. Rashmika Mandanna, who already has hits like Pushpa, Geetha Govindam, and Animal, is now walking into new territory with her next film The Girlfriend. It’s a women-centric story, and the trailer has already done its job, fun, dramatic, and a bit emotional too. The buzz feels right, but with so many similar films struggling, people are curious, will The Girlfriend break the pattern or join the list of misses?
Tollywood audiences, to be honest, love their heroes larger than life. They don’t always give the same energy to female-led stories. In the last few years, big heroines like Anushka Shetty, Tamannaah Bhatia, and Anupama Parameswaran tried their luck with lady-oriented films, and results were mixed. Tamannaah’s Odela 2 actually worked, she played a Naga sadhu, a fierce character, and pulled it off pretty well. But others didn’t find the same luck.
Anupama’s “Parada” had an interesting idea but didn’t get enough people to buy tickets. Good talk, no crowd, that kind of film. And Anushka, who once made Arundhati and Bhaagamathie such big moments for women on screen, hasn’t been able to repeat that spark. Nishabdham and Miss Shetty Mr. Polishetty got her some attention, but Ghati didn’t work at all. After that, she’s been quiet, staying away from too much limelight.
So now all eyes are on Rashmika. The Girlfriend looks fresh, young, and slightly bold, something the current crowd might connect with. If it clicks, it won’t just be a hit for her, but a small win for all actresses waiting to prove that female-driven films can pull theatres too. Who knows, maybe this time, the cheer will be for the heroine’s elevation shot.
