After Sunny Deol sparked conversation by calling out Bollywood’s obsession with remakes and fake box office numbers, another senior actor has stepped in with strong words, Sanjay Dutt. While promoting his upcoming Kannada film Kedi – The Devil, Dutt didn’t hold back about the flaws he sees in the current state of Bollywood. Drawing comparisons with South Indian cinema, he said it’s high time Bollywood stopped living in the past and started evolving like its Southern counterpart.

Sanjay pointed out that the focus in Bollywood has shifted too much towards numbers and superficial hype, instead of substance. “Back in the day,” he said, “we used to sit with writers and directors and talk about the script for hours. That’s how we made films that lasted.” According to him, the magic of films like Sholay or Deewar wasn’t accidental, it came from collaboration, vision, and respect for storytelling.

The actor, who now appears more in Telugu, Tamil, and Kannada films, praised the way South industries have improved in both story and technical standards. “They’ve moved forward while we’ve been stuck,” he said bluntly. He urged Bollywood to stop chasing artificial success and look at what’s working elsewhere. Dutt also warned that ignoring this shift would only lead to more flops and lost respect.

His words have stirred fresh debate in the industry. With two veterans, Sunny Deol and Sanjay Dutt, openly criticizing the direction Bollywood has taken, it’s no longer just about opinions.
