Generally, the Sankranti festival season is regarded as a crucial and lucrative season for Telugu films. This is the reason why several Telugu films usually flock the Sankranti season to generate massive revenues. The 2026 Sankranthi season in Tollywood ended with mixed results at the box office, and it has sparked fresh debate about how films are being released during this festival window.

Traditionally, only two or three films would come out during Sankranthi, but this year five Telugu films hit theatres at almost the same time. While three of them managed to perform well and find audiences, the others lagged behind, and one even turned out to be a clear flop.

The main concern now isn’t just that more films were released, but that this “overload” may have divided the audience and diluted potential collections. With so many movies fighting for attention, even those with good talk didn’t get a long enough run in theatres. Screen availability became tight, and films couldn’t stay in more halls for enough weeks to build momentum.

Industry insiders worry that if this trend continues, next year could see even more films perhaps six or seven clashing during the festival. The big question for makers now is whether they are entering the Sankranthi race because they truly believe in their content, or just want to cash in on the festive rush. On one hand, getting adequate number of theatres is tough, and on the other hand, the audience will also be exhausted with film choices while the lower rack of films will get ignored. This is a crucial concern that must be addressed on priority in the near future.
