Confused Tollywood Divided On Sub-Title Clause!
Back in the day, when English films were released straight in theatres, it was a little difficult for everyone to understand the dialogue.
By: Shanaz B Syed | 12 March 2026 7:07 PM ISTBack in the day, when English films were released straight in theatres, it was a little difficult for everyone to understand the dialogue. Later, some high-profile films got dubbed in Telugu, and that catered to the audience for a time. However, these days, rather than dubbing, people are enjoying the original language film with English subtitles. And here comes the ‘subtitle’ twist from the Government now.
The Central Government has now made sure that every film should contain subtitles, but Tollywood folks are the only ones complaining that watching a film with subtitles spoils the overall viewing experience of the movie. However, films like Avatar 3 and Dhurandhar are watched with subtitles only, and their immersive experiences haven’t worried anyone. So why would subtitles be a worry? Some say that the producer needs to invest nearly a couple of lakhs for the subtitles to be done, hence they are crying foul now.
On the other hand, if Telugu films are released in other states with subtitles, then even local people would also watch them, even if they are not dubbed. This is because they could read and enjoy the film. That’s how most of the time people watch Korean films and web series on Netflix, watching in the original language with subtitles. Why are Telugu makers not understanding this expandable market that could come with subtitles?
