The issue started after an interview clip featuring Sunitha went viral on social media and led to mixed reactions from the public.
During the interview, Sunitha shared her views on feminism and personal freedom. Her comments, especially the line about "My body, my right. And his eyes, his right," received strong criticism online. Many people felt that her statement sent the wrong message about women's safety and freedom.
Singer Chinmayi Sripaada was among those who disagreed with Sunitha's remarks. Through her Instagram Stories, Chinmayi said that such opinions could influence society in a negative way. She also pointed out that women and even young girls continue to face harassment and violence regardless of what they wear. Chinmayi expressed disappointment and said she expected a more responsible message from someone with public influence.
After the criticism, Sunitha posted a series of videos on her Instagram Stories to explain her side. Addressing Chinmayi directly, she said, "I have the same respect for you as a singer. I know very well what that slogan is about. I know the meaning of 'my body, my wish.' It is about having complete control over my own body."
Sunitha explained that her comments were meant to describe the reality of society, not to support inappropriate behaviour. She said, "We live in such a society," while explaining why she made the statement during the interview.
She also responded to people who questioned whether her comments justified violence against women. Referring to those who misuse the idea of personal choice, Sunitha said, "When it comes to 'my hand, my wish,' I will be the first to break their hands." She added that she has always supported women's safety and would never defend harassment or abuse.
Sunitha also said, "I like a lot about your fight, so I would never talk about it in a misleading way. Watch the full video and you'll understand that I have suffered too. And I am not okay with it."
The exchange between the two popular singers has created a major discussion on social media, with many users sharing different opinions about feminism, women's safety, and personal freedom.
