By: Priya Chowdhary Nuthalapti | 17 March 2026 9:28 AM ISTThe Telangana government is taking strict steps to control movie piracy in the state. The Telangana Cyber Security Bureau has announced that strong action will be taken against those who illegally record or share movies online.
Movie piracy has been a major problem for the film industry for many years. Many new movies get leaked online soon after their release in theatres. This causes huge financial losses to producers, distributors, and theatre owners. To stop this problem, the Cyber Security Bureau has started new measures and awareness campaigns.
According to officials, anyone involved in movie piracy may face serious punishment. People who record films in theatres, upload them on websites, or share pirated copies through social media and messaging apps can be booked under the law. If found guilty, they may face up to three years of jail.
In addition to jail punishment, there will also be heavy fines. Authorities said that the fine can go up to ₹3 lakh. In some cases, the fine may also be 5 percent of the movie’s production cost, depending on the seriousness of the offense.
Shikha Goel, Director of the Cyber Security Bureau, said that strict monitoring will be done to stop piracy activities. She explained that the department is closely watching websites, social media platforms, and other online sources where pirated movies are often shared.
To strengthen these efforts, the Cyber Security Bureau is also working together with the Telugu Film Chamber of Commerce. Both organizations have jointly formed a special anti-piracy unit to identify and stop illegal movie distribution.
This anti-piracy team will track people who upload or distribute pirated content. They will also work with internet service providers and digital platforms to quickly remove illegal movie copies.
Officials have also requested the public to support the film industry by watching movies only in theatres or through legal streaming platforms.
