No Theatres in Telangana From May 1: What’s Up?

Telangana is one of the major contributors of cinema revenue anywhere in India, and it is a crucial market for Telugu films. But now the latest developments are suggesting that theatre, Telangana could be operations from May 1.

A fresh flashpoint is brewing in the Nizam region of the Telugu cinema market as theatre owners prepare for a possible shutdown from May 1.

The move is being pushed by the Telangana Film Exhibitors Association, which is demanding a shift from the long followed rental model to a strict percentage based revenue sharing system.

Exhibitors argue that the present rental arrangement is no longer viable for single screen theatres that struggle with maintenance costs, electricity bills, staffing, and falling footfalls.

They believe a share in actual ticket sales is the only way to ensure survival. The association has reportedly set April 30 as the deadline for producers and distributors to respond to this demand.

This is not the first time such pressure has surfaced. Similar warnings were issued last year but were paused after industry discussions to avoid disruption to film releases. However, exhibitors now feel that those talks did not bring lasting solutions and are once again taking a firm stand.

If the shutdown goes ahead, several single screen theatres across the territory may remain closed, potentially affecting film releases and box office collections. Multiplex chains may continue operations, but the impact on the traditional exhibition network could be significant if the standoff continues.
