Why Are Telugu Films Always Fighting for Only One Date?

But when it comes to big-star movies, Sankranthi seems to be the most important festival. Every year, many Telugu heroes and producers try to bring their films during Sankranthi. This often leads to a big fight for theatres, release dates and screens.
But an interesting question is now coming up. Why are Telugu stars focusing so much on Sankranthi when other festivals are also available?
Deepavali is ahead, but there are very few big Telugu films showing interest in the festival season. Dasara is another major festival with a strong holiday period. Still, there is no big race among star heroes for Dasara. The same can be said about other holiday seasons during the year.
This is quite different from the film industries in other South Indian languages. Malayalam, Kannada and Tamil cinema do not always depend on just one festival for big releases. Their films arrive throughout the year, depending mainly on the content, audience interest and market conditions.
Telugu cinema can also follow the same approach. A good film does not always need a festival to become a success. Telugu audiences have already proved this many times. Several Telugu movies have become blockbusters even without a major festival advantage. If the content is strong, audiences will come to theatres whether the film releases during Sankranthi, Dasara, Deepavali or an ordinary weekend.
Of course, Sankranthi has special importance in Telugu states. It is a long holiday season, families usually go to theatres together, and the festival traditionally gives films a strong advantage. So, wanting a Sankranthi release is understandable.
But having too many big films competing for the same festival can also create problems. Some films may lose screens, shows and audience attention. At the same time, other festivals remain underused.
Instead of asking, “Who will win Sankranthi?”, Telugu cinema could ask, “Which is the best date for our content?”
Star heroes have the power to make different festival seasons important. If they start choosing Deepavali, Dasara and other holidays with confidence, the Telugu film industry can create more successful seasons throughout the year.
Ultimately, content is bigger than any festival. Telugu audiences have already proved that. It may be time for Telugu cinema to trusits audience and stop treating Sankranthi as the only golden release window.
