Box Office: Slow 2025, Tollywood Needs Big 2026!
The likes of OG and Akhanda 2 which were projected to be massive grossers at the box office couldn’t come close to the expectations.
By: Tupaki Desk | 29 Dec 2025 9:27 AM ISTThe Telugu cinema box office has been rather hot and cold in 2025 with not a single mainstream film being able to touch the 300 crore mark at the global box office. It needs to be said that 2025 will go down as one of the most embarrassing and forgettable years for Tollywood in recent memory, particularly in terms of box office performance.
Shockingly, not a single Telugu film managed to cross the ₹300 crore mark, something that would have been unthinkable just a few years ago. The year began with huge expectations, backed by star driven projects, massive budgets, and aggressive promotions. However, reality turned out to be harsh.
Almost every high stake film failed to meet expectations, leaving distributors and exhibitors deeply disappointed. Big stars, big banners, and big publicity could not compensate for weak scripts, routine storytelling, and lack of emotional connection with audiences.
The likes of OG and Akhanda 2 which were projected to be massive grossers at the box office couldn’t come close to the expectations.
The gap between production costs and theatrical returns widened dangerously, pushing many buyers into losses. Theatre owners, already struggling with rising operational costs, were hit the hardest as footfalls remained inconsistent throughout the year.
On the brighter side, a few small films created genuine magic with strong content and honest storytelling. These films earned appreciation and decent returns, but their impact was largely limited to major towns and urban centers. They could not revive the overall market or compensate for the failures of big budget releases.
Overall, 2025 exposed serious flaws in Tollywood’s planning and content priorities, serving as a wake up call for the industry to rethink its approach going forward.
