Success Of These Films Making Tollywood Smile
That led Tollywood to believe that the era of average films working at the box office is over. But the belief didn’t last forever.
By: Shanaz B Syed | 17 Aug 2026 5:37 PM ISTAt the end of 2025, whenever a small film or a routine commercial film hits cinemas, its ability to get ticket sales used to end by the end of the first day’s first show itself. Only if the content clicks will the film work, or else, the film will have to stare at empty seats. That led Tollywood to believe that the era of average films working at the box office is over. But the belief didn’t last forever.
In recent times, movies like Maa Inti Bangaaram, Lenin, Chennai Love Story, Korean Kanakaraju and now Viswananth & Sons have all got average ratings from critics, issues in the second half and then got slammed on release day for half-baked content. But then, the films have received a warm welcome at the box office and made crores in just the first three days of release. That proved a fact that decent content is enough for the audience to get excited and watch.
Also, some say that the audience got bored of watching movies and web series on OTT, and the extra charges being levied by the digital streaming sites in the name of subscription are another reason that moved many audiences to theatres these days. So an average film still works in theatres, and the last few months are proof of that.
Needless to say, the success of these films is making Tollywood smile, and more films are likely to be sent to theatres from now onwards, irrespective of their OTT deals, as the box office itself is bearing fruit.
