Caution: Bollywood Stars Chasing Telugu Directors
Bollywood once dictated the terms, but now, they are calling Telugu folks to dictate them.
By: Shanaz B Syed | 23 April 2026 10:54 PM ISTBollywood once dictated the terms, but now, they are calling Telugu folks to dictate them. For years, Hindi cinema dictated the range, stars, and storytelling. Today, the flow has reversed. All thanks to SS Rajamouli, Telugu cinema is driving the conversation, followed by Kannada films. And the biggest proof? Bollywood stars are lining up for Telugu directors in a big way.
Not every top Telugu director is rushing to Mumbai, as big names like SS Rajamouli, Sukumar, and Trivikram are still focused on Telugu stars only. Their market is strong. There’s no urgency to shift. However, a different set of directors is making that move. Sandeep Reddy Vanga is the biggest example. From Arjun Reddy to Kabir Singh to Animal, he has already cracked Bollywood. Now, after Spirit with Prabhas, he’s set to return with Animal Park alongside Ranbir Kapoor. Today, almost every top Hindi star wants to collaborate with him.
Then comes Vamshi Paidipally. After Varisu, he explored a project with Aamir Khan, which didn’t materialise. Now, talks have progressed with Salman Khan, and the film took off the other day. Chandoo Mondeti is another interesting case. After Karthikeya 2 worked across pan-India, he’s now working on a period film with Akshay Kumar, with Rana Daggubati also playing a crucial role.
And then there’s Boyapati Srinu. Known for his mass template, he’s now in talks with Ranveer Singh for a mass action movie after earlier plans with another Telugu director didn’t take off.
Bollywood stars are no longer just chasing big banners, but they’re chasing directors who can deliver strong, rooted, mass-connected stories. And right now, many of those voices are coming from Telugu cinema. However, Telugu directors have to make sure that their regular gimmicks won’t work at the Bollywood root level and carve out something stronger. Otherwise, the films end up like how Jersey and HIT Hindi versions faded out.
