There was a time when Telugu cinema had heroes who were known mainly for their stylish looks, romantic stories, family dramas and soft characters. Actors like Sobhan Babu became popular with a strong class image. Their films did not always depend on violence, mass elevations or larger-than-life action.
But today's Tollywood seems to be moving in a completely different direction. Mahesh Babu is one of the biggest examples. He was once known as the “Prince” of Tollywood and became a favourite among family and class audiences. But films like Pokiri showed a completely different side of him. His transformation into a mass hero changed the way audiences looked at him.
The same trend can be seen among the younger generation. Ram was once strongly associated with chocolate-boy roles and romantic entertainers. But today, he is increasingly choosing mass-oriented subjects. His upcoming Andhra King Taluka is another example of his changing image while pure love stories have become much less common in his lineup.
Nani also built a strong image as a natural performer who could connect with family audiences. But with films like Dasara and now The Paradise, he is moving deeper into the mass zone.
Even Sharwanand, who has mostly been associated with class, family and emotional films, is now trying a completely different path with Bhogi. The teaser itself shows him in an intense and violent mass avatar that audiences have rarely seen from him.
This raises an interesting question: Are class heroes slowly disappearing from Tollywood? Perhaps the answer is not exactly yes. Today's heroes may still have class appeal, but they no longer want to remain restricted to one image. They want to prove that they can handle romance, family emotions, action and mass roles.
The audience has also changed. Mass elevations, intense action and powerful characters are getting huge attention. Naturally, heroes are responding to that demand.
So, rather than saying class heroes are disappearing, it may be better to say that Tollywood heroes are becoming all-rounders.
The era of heroes being limited to only “class” or “mass” may slowly be coming to an end.
