However, in the past, supporting characters also played a very important role in making movies successful. Funny comedians, strong villains, caring friends, and emotional family members often became just as popular as the lead actors.
Many older Telugu films are still remembered because of their unforgettable supporting performances. Actors like Sunil, Kota Srinivasa Rao, Brahmanandam, Ali, and many others entertained audiences with unique characters. Their roles added humor, emotion, and excitement to every scene. Even after watching the movie, fans continued talking about these memorable performances.
Today, things have changed in many Telugu films. Most of the attention is now focused only on the hero. The story, action scenes, songs, and emotional moments mainly revolve around the lead actor. Because of this, supporting characters often receive very little screen time and limited importance.
Comedy tracks are also not as effective as they were in the past. Instead of naturally fitting into the story, many comedy scenes feel forced. Likewise, villains in several recent films do not have enough depth. Without a powerful villain or a strong supporting cast, the hero's journey also feels less exciting.
A great supporting character can make every scene more interesting. A smart friend, a dangerous villain, or a lovable family member can add more emotion and balance to the story. These characters help build stronger relationships on screen and make the audience connect better with the film.
Tollywood has no shortage of talented actors. Many experienced and young performers are capable of delivering excellent supporting roles. What they need are well-written characters that allow them to showcase their talent.
Good writing is the key to creating memorable supporting roles. When every character has a purpose and a strong personality, the entire film becomes richer and more entertaining. A hero shines even brighter when surrounded by equally strong characters.
As Telugu cinema continues to grow on a global level, filmmakers may benefit from giving more importance to supporting roles. A balanced story with memorable characters can leave a lasting impact on audiences and make movies enjoyable long after they leave the theatre.
