New Anti-Piracy Pact Aims to Protect Tollywood Films
Digital piracy has become one of the biggest problems for the Indian film industry, especially Tollywood.
By: Priya Chowdhary Nuthalapti | 6 Jan 2026 11:07 AM ISTDigital piracy has become one of the biggest problems for the Indian film industry, especially Tollywood. Every time a new Telugu movie releases in theatres, illegal links start appearing online within hours. These pirated versions badly affect box office collections and cause heavy losses to producers, distributors, and theatres. Even though police have arrested several people linked to piracy websites in the past, the issue continues because new platforms keep coming up again and again.
For Tollywood, piracy is not just a legal issue but a threat to its survival. Small and medium-budget films suffer the most, as they depend completely on theatrical revenue. When movies are leaked online early, audiences prefer watching them for free instead of buying tickets. This has forced the Telugu film industry to take stronger steps and work closely with law enforcement agencies.
In a major development, the Telangana Cyber Security Bureau (TGCSB) and the Telugu Film Chamber of Commerce (TFCC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to fight online piracy more effectively. This agreement focuses on real-time monitoring, fast removal of pirated content, and strict legal action against those involved.
The MoU was signed by TGCSB Director Shikha Goel and TFCC President Daggubati Suresh Babu, in the presence of senior police officials. With this partnership, both sides aim to act quickly during film releases and stop piracy before it spreads widely.
Under this new system, advanced technology tools like automated trackers and content identification software will be used. Special anti-piracy agents from TFCC will also work directly with cyber police teams. Pirated links will be blocked faster by coordinating with internet service providers, OTT platforms, social media companies and app stores.
Regular review meetings will be held to track progress and improve strategies. This strong collaboration sends a clear message that Tollywood is serious about protecting its films. If implemented well, this move could greatly reduce piracy and help the industry recover its rightful earnings. So we have to wait and see how this is going to go forward and work for Telugu films safety.
