Adding more to this, another Indian film, this time something from the South, is standing tall.
It’s an immense moment of pride for Tamil cinema in particular, as last year's runaway hit film “Tourist Family” is now officially eligible and in contention for the Best Picture (Foreign Film) category at the 98th Academy Awards. There’s a huge competition among the 201 foreign language films that are vying for a nomination at the Oscars this year, however. But joining this contender list itself is a huge achievement for a film that began as a small flick.
Tourist Family is a 2025 Tamil language drama written and directed by Abhishan Jeevinth in his debut feature, starring Sasikumar and Simran in the lead roles. The story follows the journey of a Sri Lankan Tamil family forced to flee their homeland and live incognito in a Tamil Nadu town. Finally, when police identify them, the whole colony lies for them, showcasing the humanitarian perspective.
Tourist Family collected almost ₹90 crores from the worldwide box office while it was made on a modest budget. In case if the film gets a nomination, that will be nothing less than a gigantic achievement.
