Because of this, directors cannot make the same type of movies again and again. They need to come up with fresh stories and also change their direction style. Only then can they stay successful for a long time.
A good example is director Sekhar Kammula. For many years, he became famous for making soft love stories and family dramas like Anand, Godavari, Happy Days, Fidaa, and Love Story. These films had simple emotions and beautiful relationships. But instead of repeating the same formula, Sekhar Kammula surprised everyone by directing Kuberaa. The film was completely different from his earlier movies. It had a serious theme, bigger scale, and a new style of storytelling. This proved that directors should not remain inside one comfort zone.
Now another interesting example is Venky Atluri. During the promotions of Vishwanath And Sons, he revealed how the project was born. Venky first narrated a biopic to actor Suriya. The actor liked the script, but the project could not move forward because of rights issues. At the same time, Suriya had already completed two biopics and wanted to do something different.
Suriya then asked Venky if he had a light-hearted and emotional family story. Venky narrated another script based on the relationship between a 40-year-old man and a 20-year-old youngster. Suriya immediately loved the idea during the first narration itself and gave his approval. That story later became Vishwanath And Sons.
This shows that even directors must be flexible. Sometimes the first idea may not happen, but a better story can come from the same discussion. Instead of holding on to one script, directors should be ready to change according to the actor, audience, and situation.
