By: Tupaki Desk | 30 Jun 2025 5:10 PM ISTAfter Rajamouli introduced the franchise culture in Telugu cinema with epic Baahubali, this trend is now being observed all across South Indian Cinema. It has become particularly prevalent in Tamil cinema as we are seeing multiple films of this category.
Coming to the topic now, Tamil director Vetrimaaran is reportedly building a “Vada Chennai Universe” starting with Vada Chennai 2, starring Dhanush, then using elements from that film to launch connected stories, bringing in actors like Simbu and potentially expanding into sequels or spin-offs.
On the other hand, we have talented Director Lokesh Kanagaraj, who is already building a Lokesh cinematic universe with Kaithi, Leo, Vikram and related.
While both directors are creating universes, their styles are different. LCU is full of high-octane action and targets a pan-India audience. Vetrimaaran’s Vada Chennai Universe is expected to focus more on deep storytelling and strong characters, rooted in local settings.
In terms of pure skill and narration skills, there is absolutely no match to Vetrimaran as he is arguably one of the greatest film makers of this current generation in Indian Cinema. But in terms of commercial appeal, it is Lokesh Kanagaraj, who is ahead in this race as he has tremendous pull.
So in terms of commercial meter and potential box office returns, it needs to be said that the Lokesh cinematic universe is miles ahead of Vetrimaaran cinematic universe. But in terms of pure marriage skills, it is Vetrimaran is going to be ahead.
