By: Shanaz B Syed | 1 Jun 2026 11:14 AM ISTOther day, Tamil director Vignesh Shivan, who happens to be the husband of Superstar actress Nayanthara, stirred the hornet’s nest. While his latest film, Love Insurance Kompany, featuring Pradeep Ranganathan in the lead, got slammed by critics and had a poor run at the Tamil Box Office, the film was released on OTT recently, and a section of the audience felt that it’s a good film, while others didn’t enjoy it as usual. Reacting to some of those positive comments that were sent to him, Vignesh penned an emotional open letter, slamming the critics.
According to Vignesh, many viewers told him they haven't watched the film in theatres because of the widespread negativity surrounding the movie on social media during the time of release. He argued that while some films survive the negative campaigns, others fall victim to rapidly changing public perception. It is easy to understand where the filmmaker is coming from. Every director spends years developing a project, and watching it collapse at the box office can be heartbreaking. LIK also faced lots of production delays, and Nayanthara herself has invested a lot of money in the film. Finally, with the film not working out, surely it’s easy to blame the critics this way.
Vignesh also pointed out that several films now regarded as classics were not fully appreciated during their original theatrical releases. These are the days, blaming social media negativity or film critics alone has become a common explanation whenever a film underperforms. But does these filmmakers have a reality check at all? Almost every major release today faces trolling, criticism, memes, and negative reviews within hours of release. Yet genuinely engaging films often rise above the noise through strong word-of-mouth. Suriya’s Karuppu is the latest example, as the film got poor reviews but raked up ₹300+ crores collection now.
If the film’s content is good, neither reviews nor negative talk can hamper its box office performance. Well, Vignesh should be reading that!
