Jana Nayagan Issue: High Court Gives Clearance

A remake of Anil Ravipudi’s Bhagwant Kesari, Vijay’s Jana Nayagan achieved much hype in Tamil Nadu with the star hero declaring that this movie is going to be his last one. But all the hype got watered down with a complaint filed in Tamil Nadu saying that the film’s content has lots of political punches, and showcasing it might lead to communal turmoil in the Tamil state.

Finally, the ‘Jana Nayagan’ controversy reached its crucial turning point, with the High Court granting clearance to the film. In its verdict, the court directed the CBFC to issue a U/A certificate to the Vijay starrer whose release got cancelled today, pending the High Court verdict on the Censor Certificate fiasco. This will surely bring relief to the makers of the film who have invested crores in the movie.

Though the issue had triggered a widespread debate, many drew parallels with Kamal Haasan’s Vishwaroopam episode. During that time, Kama went ahead with the release of the film in Telugu states and other parts of the country, and Overseas as well, though its release was kept on hold in Tamil Nadu. Rather than doing the same thing, Vijay has opted to halt the release completely, causing much loss to the makers from the potential Overseas markets, feel analysts.

On the other hand, Vijay’s producers are issuing refunds for cancelled premieres and shows, a move that surprised fans and trade circles alike. Now that the High Court has given clarity, we have to see if the film will hit cinemas tomorrow on a grand scale.
