The movie stars Telugu actor Sundeep Kishan in the lead role, along with Faria Abdullah. Since Jason Sanjay is Vijay’s son, there was naturally a lot of interest and expectations around his first film.
Sigma was released on October 2, on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti. However, the film has not received the kind of response that was expected. Its box office performance in the first two days has been disappointing. According to trade reports, the film collected around Rs. 4.40 crore gross across India in two days. Its net collection was around Rs. 3.85 crore.
The second day was even weaker. The film reportedly collected only around Rs. 1.50 crore net. The Tamil version earned around Rs. 95 lakh, while the Telugu version collected only around Rs. 55 lakh. The movie also recorded low theatre occupancy, which shows that audiences are not strongly connecting with the film.
The Telugu version has been a major disappointment, while the film has also struggled to create a strong impact in other markets. This has raised a question among movie lovers: Was Jason Sanjay’s debut as a director too early?
Being Vijay’s son has given Jason a lot of attention even before his first film. But expectations can also become a huge pressure. Directing a film is not easy, especially when the project has a known actor and a big star family name attached to it.
Sigma tells the story of a librarian who faces financial problems and tries to clear his debts. His circumstances slowly take him into the dangerous world of drug dealers, illegal casinos and robberies. The idea has some interesting elements, but the execution appears to have failed to connect with audiences.
Jason Sanjay may have needed more time to understand filmmaking, storytelling and audience expectations before making his debut. However, one film should not decide his future. He has the opportunity to learn from this experience and improve his direction skills.
With better scripts, stronger execution and the right guidance, Jason Sanjay can still prove himself as a director in the future.
