It started with two friends chatting, somewhere in a tea stall. Whats with these movie names, Chari? one of them asked, clearly irritated. The name K-Ramp came up. How do you even tell your parents youre going to watch something like that? It was a question, but also a complaint, about where things are heading.
They laughed at first, then started counting. Earlier, there were titles like Raja Varu Rani Garu, Vinaro Bhagyamu Vishnu Katha... they sounded nice, didnt they? But now? Every new film sounds like its been named in a hurry, just to grab attention. One heros film is titled Badass. Forget the dictionary meaning, how are people supposed to say that in public?
The frustration wasnt just about words, it was about sense. You want families to come watch the movie, but you give it names they cant even repeat properly. There was a time when Hollywood and Hindi films were dubbed into Telugu with clean titles, Premalayam, Bhuloka Veerudu, Bhootala Dibba. Even Tamil films came with decent Telugu names. Now, no one bothers. Everyone wants Telugu box office, but not Telugu titles.
The conversation ended with silence. One walked off, the other just stared at his cup. Were not asking for every movie to be named Shankarabharanam, he had said. Just pick names that dont sound like a punchline. Thats all. Not old-school. Not preachy. Just sensible.
