10 Cr Cost For Free Bus Rides In 2 Days!
By: Tupaki Desk | 14 Jun 2023 10:44 PM ISTWithout ignoring the election promise, the Congress party rolled out free travel for women in RTC buses in Karnataka. The new scheme started on Sunday. However, the service is not allowed on all the buses and women can avail of the offer only in non-premium services.
The service was rolled out in a big way and women were submitted the free passes. As women were given the passes they flaunted the free tickets by taking to social media. Though there is criticism that such offers should be given to economically weaker sections, the scheme was launched.
Now the data on how many people used the scheme was out as per the reports. On day one of the start of the scheme, as many as 5.17 lakh people traveled on buses and the cost of the tickets was around Rs 1.40 crores. As Sunday was a holiday, fewer numbers might have been recorded.
On Monday, the numbers saw a big rise, and around 41.34 lakh passengers traveled on buses. The costs of the tickets are around Rs 8.83 crores which is quite high. If we combine the tickets for Sunday and Monday they cost around Rs 10.24 crores.
Experts say that it would put a burden of around Rs 3,400 crores on the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation. Special cards are issued for the scheme and 1.2 crores more women are expected to utilize the scheme and apply for the smart cards.
As women are given free tickets, the RTC allocated 50 percent of seats for men in the buses, and signs saying the same were also painted on the buses. Usually, we see different case in buses in the country.
