The report issued by the poll rights group ADR (Association for Democratic Reforms) stated that a lion share of winning candidates in Bihar polls have criminal cases against them.
163 candidates out of the 241 candidates, who claimed victory are facing criminal cases. The cases include murder, attempt to murder, kidnapping, crimes against women, etc.
The percentage of candidates with a criminal background running the elections increasing over the past five years is a serious area of concern. In the previous election, i.e, 2015, 142 out of 243 MLAs have criminal cases against them. This translates to 58 percent of the total candidates.
The percentage has gone up by 10 percent in the 2020 Assembly polls. The ADR report claimed that 163 out of 243 winning candidates have declared serious criminal cases. 68 percent of candidates are facing criminal cases.
Coming to the financial details of candidates who emerged victorious in the polls, 194 out of the total 241 candidates are crorepatis which translates to 81 percent. In 2015 elections, as many as 67 percent of MLAs are crorepatis, the report said.
On the other hand, the report said around 32 percent of winning candidates have educational qualifications between 5th pass and 12th pass. Only 62 percent of winning candidates holds a Graduate degree and above, while a candidate declared having a diploma degree.
