170 Congress MLAs Changed Parties In four years
By: Tupaki Desk | 12 March 2021 3:32 AM GMTIn what could be seen as a measure of the ineffectual leadership, as many as 170 Congress MLAs have left the party during the last four years. These MLAs have won on Congress ticket, but later defected to other parties.
In contrast, during the same period only 18 BJP MLAs had defected to other parties. This in fact shows the loosening grip of the Congress leadership on its MLAs. The party has seen major desertions in states like Telangana and Gujarat. After the 2019 elections, as many as five MPs have defected. Similarly, as many as seven Rajya Sabha members from the Congress have left the party. As many as ten Rajya Sabha MPs, including three from the TDP, have joined the BJP giving it the much-needed numerical edge in the upper house.
A total of 433 MLAs have defected from the parties on whose ticket they had won during the 2016-2020 period. Of them, 182 have joined the BJP. Some 38 have joined the Congress Party. Of the regional parties, the Telangana Rashtra Samithi turned out to be the biggest lure for the MLAs. As many as 25 MLAs from various parties, including the Congress, have joined the TRS during this period.
