18 Encounters in 48 Hours! What's Happening?

At least 18 Encounters happened in Uttar Pradesh in the past 48 hours. Several Gangsters have been gunned down and anywhere around 25 individuals with criminal records were taken into custody. You would be proven wrong if assumed Cops have resorted to elimination of criminals on such a huge level without the consent of the Chief Minister.
Gangster Indrapal who is facing 33 criminal cases was shot dead by Special Task Force. In these encounters, Few Policemen sustained injuries.
DGP OP Singh defended the Encounters saying cops were firing only in self-defense. He downplayed the mass encounters saying it's an exercise to nab criminals.
Since Yogi Adityanath took charge as CM in March 2017, As many as 950 encounters happened in UP. More than 30 criminals were killed and over 200 people have been sent behind the bars. National Human Rights Commission sought a detailed report on killings in encounters. Whereas, UP Govt maintains magisterial enquiry is being conducted after every encounter.
