As many as 18 village councils in Uttar Pradesh demands stern action against local Coca Cola bottling plant alleging excess usage of ground water by the company has led to water scarcity in the area.

Villagers of Mehdiganj area in Varanasi, the constituency represented by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, complain they have been facing water shortage ever since the Coca Cola plant was established in 1999. All the elected Village Councils joined chorus with people of Mehdiganj in their fight against Coca Cola.

Coca Cola extracting ground water is making the lives of poor miserably. The village councils urge State Pollution Control Board, which issued license to Coca Cola, to prohibit the company from extracting the ground water at least from now.

Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages Pvt ltd, however, claims a 2012 Study conducted by Central Ground Water Board proved water scarcity in Mehdiganj area wasn't due to the bottling plant.
