Here's a very disconcerting side effect of Covid 19. A staggering 5.80 lakh surgeries were cancelled in India alone due to Corona lockdown. Know what Is the number of surgeries cancelled during the twelve weeks of the lockdown in the world? It's a whopping 2.84 crore. Yes. That is the number of surgeries cancelled or postponed due to Corona in the world.
The wait will only get longer, a network of 5000 wellknown surgeons in the world says. The network studied the number of cases postponed due to covid and said that non-availability of expert surgeons as they are engaged elsewhere in fighting Covid 19 and the fear of viral infections are the two major reasons for the postponement of the surgeries. Age and the health condition of the patients too is said to the main reason for the deferment of the surgical procedures.
According to them, at least 72.3 per cent of the planned surgeries have been postponed. Worldwide, as many as 2.3 million cancer surgeries have either been postponed or cancelled. This is among the biggest disruption in the medical system of the world so far, experts say.
