As a major relief to Indian multinational information technology services Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), a top court in the United States halved the damage amount that has to be paid in a lawsuit.

The appeals court in the United States halved the punitive damage charges to $140 million from a whopping $280 million in a lawsuit that was filed in connection with a trade secret theft.

Going into detail, in the year 2014 US-based Software company, Epic Systems hired software firm (TCS) as consultants to help them to establish health care software at the Kaiser Permanente Sunnyside Medical Center in Portland.

However, Epic Systems alleged trade secret theft charges on TCS and said the employees hired by the firm illegally collected the details of Epic System and crucial documents and unique files were downloading with a fake ID.

Following this, a US court in 2017 which heard the lawsuit filed by Epic Systems held TCS guilty and directed the firm to pay $940 million as a fine amount. This includes $240 million as compensation and $700 million as punitive damages.

The next year, Wisconsin court cut short the damage amount to $420 million from a huge $940 million. Following this, TCS moved an upper court to cut the damage amount.
