NRIs Will Lose Properties If Wives Were Abandoned!
Union Government decided to take stringent action if Indian Women were subjected to harassment after marriage by their NRIs Husbands. An inter-ministerial committee recommends seizure of the properties of not only husband but also his close family members.

Usually, Properties of Husband will be attached in civil cases to ensure the Accused appears in the court or for providing monetary benefit to the victim who is in dire state. But now, The Ministry of Women and Child Development confirms considering the proposal to seize the properties of Offender's relatives as well.

As per the statistics, External Affairs Ministry received 3,328 distress calls from NRI from January 1st, 2015 to November 30th, 2017. Most of the cases are linked to dowry demands, physical abuse and abandonment.

In 2017 itself, Women and Child Development (WCD) Minister Maneka Gandhi proposed the idea of linking the marriage registrations with her Ministry for swift action against offenders. Even the decision to appoint an integrated nodal agency under the WCD to address complains on related to NRI Marriages has been taken in the same inter-ministerial meeting participated by External Affairs minister Sushma Swaraj and Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad. In addition, Decision has been made to cancel the Passports of the NRI Husband if the abandonment is brought to the notice of the courts. A web portal was proposed by the Centre to help women abandoned by NRI husbands in foreign countries.

As per NGO Manavi, Gujarat is home for 12,000 abandoned women. In Punjab, The count of abandoned wives of NRI Men touched 25,000 by 2007 itself. The fact that registration of marriages isn't mandatory in most of the Indian states is a serious issue.
